Use case

EDI orders on Shopify, without the project

Most Shopify wholesalers do not need a full X12 EDI pipeline. LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform or trading partner already produces, PDF, printable or CSV, and turns them into clean Shopify draft orders. When a partner genuinely mandates true X12, our consulting team can build it.

What is EDI order automation?

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is the standard format large retailers and distributors use to send purchase orders, most often the EDI 850. Accepting it the traditional way means a full integration project: an EDI provider, document mapping, certification, testing and per-transaction fees for every trading partner. EDI order automation is the lighter path. Instead of building a true X12 pipeline for every partner, LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform (like SPS Commerce) or trading partner already produces, PDF, printable or CSV, and turns them into clean Shopify draft orders. For the partners that genuinely mandate certified X12, LevelOps consulting can stand up a real integration.

Six reasons EDI orders are painful on Shopify

EDI is how big retail partners send orders, but the traditional way of accepting it is heavy, slow and expensive.

Integration projects

A full X12 setup means a provider, document mapping and weeks of testing per partner.

Per-document fees

Many EDI platforms charge per transaction, and the costs climb with volume.

Re-keying anyway

Even with a platform, the PO is often still typed into Shopify by hand at the end.

Partner sprawl

Every retailer has its own IDs, labels and quirks to map and maintain.

Slow onboarding

Adding a new EDI partner can take months before the first order flows.

Shopify is not native EDI

Shopify has no built-in X12, so something has to bridge the gap.

Four steps, from EDI document to draft order

  1. 01

    The EDI order arrives

From SPS Commerce, a partner portal export, email or a PDF of the purchase order. 02, Read

  2. 02

    LevelOps reads it

The PO document is read directly, no fixed template or per-partner mapping project required. 03, Match

  3. 03

    Products, customer, price

Lines are matched to your Shopify SKUs, the right B2B company, and your price lists. 04, Draft

  4. 04

    A clean draft order

A native Shopify draft order is created, ready to review, fulfill and sync to accounting.

Six outcomes of automated EDI orders

EDI orders without the project. Skip the months-long X12 build for partners that send documents you can read. Works with your EDI platform. LevelOps reads the order documents SPS Commerce and similar tools output. No more re-keying. The purchase order becomes a Shopify draft order automatically. Pricing from Shopify. Every line is priced from your price lists, never from the document. True X12 when you need it. For mandated certified integrations, consulting builds the real pipeline. Accounting stays in sync. Orders flow to QuickBooks, Odoo or your ERP without double entry.

How EDI orders actually reach you

Not every partner needs certified X12. Here is what each path looks like, and where LevelOps fits each one. How LevelOps fits. Most wholesale partners do not require certified X12. For them, LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform or partner already produces and turns them into Shopify draft orders, no integration project. When a retailer genuinely mandates full X12, our consulting team builds that pipeline.

Three ways to accept EDI orders on Shopify

Shopify has no native X12, so something has to bridge the gap. Here is the trade-off.

Reads your EDI documents, writes Shopify draft orders

LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform or partner produces, matches them to the right company and price list, and writes native Shopify draft orders, then syncs to QuickBooks, Odoo or your ERP.

Questions, answered

What is EDI order automation?

It is turning the EDI purchase orders your retail partners send into Shopify orders automatically. Rather than building a full X12 pipeline, LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform or partner produces and creates matched, priced Shopify draft orders.

Does LevelOps replace my EDI provider or SPS Commerce?

No. LevelOps reads the order documents your EDI platform produces and turns them into Shopify draft orders. It complements an EDI platform, and it is not a certified X12 network.

Can it handle true X12 EDI?

For partners that mandate certified X12, LevelOps consulting can build a true integration. For everyone else, reading the order documents is faster and far cheaper than a full pipeline.

Does Shopify support EDI natively?

No. Shopify has no built-in X12. LevelOps bridges the gap by turning EDI order documents into native Shopify draft orders.

Which documents can it read?

PDF and printable purchase orders, CSV and spreadsheet exports from EDI platforms and partner portals, and POs sent by email, with no fixed template required.

Will orders sync to my ERP?

Yes. QuickBooks, Odoo and Katana MRP through LevelOps, so the same order is never entered twice.

What is the EDI 850 and does LevelOps handle it?

The EDI 850 is the standard purchase order transaction large retailers send. LevelOps reads the readable PO document your EDI platform or partner produces from that transaction, and for a certified 850 integration our consulting team can build the real X12 pipeline.

How does EDI order automation relate to Shopify Flow?

Shopify Flow automates actions that happen after an order exists in Shopify: fulfillment routing, tagging, customer communication, and fraud rules. LevelOps sits upstream of Flow, converting the EDI document into a Shopify draft, and Flow then runs on every order it creates.

Do I need Shopify B2B or Shopify Plus to accept EDI orders?

No. Document automation works on any Shopify plan that supports draft orders, including Basic. Shopify B2B, on Plus and as a standalone B2B feature, unlocks companies, price lists, and payment terms that automation will use when present, but it is not a prerequisite.

Can it apply price lists and volume discounts to EDI orders?

Yes, when pricing is configured in Shopify. Every line is priced from your Shopify catalog and the correct B2B price list for the resolved customer, so the price on the inbound document is ignored.

How does it affect my ERP or MRP integration?

Order automation creates the draft order in Shopify. Whatever ERP or MRP integration you already have between Shopify and Katana, MRPeasy, NetSuite, Business Central, or QuickBooks continues to work and sees the new order like any other.

What is the difference between EDI order automation and a B2B portal?

A B2B portal is a self-serve interface where buyers place orders directly. EDI order automation handles the retail partners who send structured purchase order documents instead. Many wholesalers run both, a portal for self-serve accounts and document automation for EDI and email orders.
